Programme Planning, Design and Management

  • Programmes consist of a set or groupings of courses. Usually, these would be sets of courses which share some sort of common aim. That aim may be the award of a qualification for learners who successfully complete a requisite number or series of courses in an area of expertise; or it may be that a particular audience is targeted, or a particular teaching medium is used (Calder 1994:18)
  • Planning at this level is very important: it is necessary to conduct needs analyses; develop budgets; plan human resources; use of technology; marketing strategies, for example.
  • Continued management and evaluation of the programme is also vital.
  • Import and export of programmes plays a significant role in distance education.
