      The proposed outcomes of the Conference are the following:

• Greater clarity on the concepts of open learning and distance education, and realistic expectations of the role that they can play in the African context.

• An appreciation of the conditions necessary for the provision of cost-effective, quality distance education.

• Possible strategies for developing quality distance education in a country, including consideration of policy around distance education, mechanisms for assuring quality and sharing resources, and supporting research.

• Possible regional and/or continental strategies for collaboration, to help realise the potential of distance education.
