South Africa Travel Information – Top Tips

Planning a trip to South Africa may seem overwhelming, since there is so much to see and do.  With so much to think about, it’s best to start with the basics and go from there.  Here is some South Africa travel information to think about as you plan your trip to South Africa.

Seasons and Climate

There are two distinct seasons in South Africa.  From May to September is winter and the rainy season.  From October to April is the summer, and it is drier and warmer than in the winter.  Both seasons can be nice for travel, but be prepared for wet conditions if you arrive during winter and plan accordingly.

Arrival

Most international visitors arrive in South Africa by way of Johannesburg International Airport.  Check online for the latest travel updates for Johannesburg and South African travel facts, such as visas needed in South Africa.  Check ahead of time so you can be sure and have all your documentation in order upon arrival in Johannesburg. You can stay in Johannesburg to travel to the town of Pretoria, a smaller city just outside of Johannesburg that is popular with travelers.

Getting Around

Since public transportation is not very reliable in South Africa, renting a car is the best option for travelling around.  Escorted tours can also be arranged.  In Johannesburg South Africa travel information is available from a number of tour agencies.

Travel to the Interior

The interior of South Africa is defined by its sweeping savannahs.  This diverse area is home to several national parks and wildlife reserves as well as bush lodges and game parks.  You can drive between parks or arrange for a package safari with a local tour operator.  In addition to wildlife, central South Africa is home to many townships, traditional villages that make interesting cultural visits.  Wineries dot the area as well, and many people like to take time to sample some of the famous South African wines while they are here.

Travel to the Coast

Many people travel to South Africa to enjoy Cape Peninsula and it many beautiful beaches.  Cape Town is the oldest city in South Africa and one of the most popular destinations in the Cape area.  There are many areas to explore near Cape Town, making it a good base for day excursions.  Some popular area attractions are Boulders Beach, Camps Bay and Bantry Bay.  Summer time is the most popular time to travel to the Cape Peninsula.

Driving Safety

Exploring South Africa by car can be a great experience.  The roads are excellent in South Africa but it is advisable not to drive at night. Animals will often stray onto roads leading to car accidents.  Although South Africa is fairly safe, carjackings are not unknown and it is best to use caution at all times.  Buy a good and current South Africa road map to make navigating simple.

Health Safety

No immunizations are required for entry into South Africa unless you are coming from a Yellow Fever zone, then you need to show proper immunization documentation.  Children under 1 year are exempt.  Malaria is only a problem in certain areas of South Africa, including part of Kruger National Park and Lowveld of Mpumalanga and Limpopo and on the Maputaland coast of KwaZulu-Natal.  If you are planning on travelling to these areas during your stay in South Africa, check with your local doctor to find the correct anti-malarial medicine.
