South Africa Travel Guide & Recommendations

A great way to see the Cape Peninsula in South Africa is by car.  Great roads make driving easy, and there is so much to see that having a car gives you the freedom to explore as much as you want.  There are some things you should consider while planning your trip.

Start off by getting a good South Africa travel guide.  Find out the best airport to fly into depending on where you want to go.  South Africa flights normally arrive in either Cape Town or Pretoria, both of which are capitol cities of South Africa.  Either way, you can arrange a rental car ahead of time so it will be ready when you get there.

Most international flights fly into Johannesburg International Airport. Plan a Pretoria trip after you have arrived in Johannesburg.  Pretoria is close by Johannesburg but smaller and more attractive to travelers. Pretoria is a beautiful city to travel to year round, but it is especially so in October.  Known as Jacaranda City, Pretoria is home to over 70,000 of these trees which erupt in bright purple, fragrant blooms every fall. Pretoria is easy on the visitor since its streets are easy to navigate.  Pretoria is a good base point for exploring the north of South Africa as well.

When you are ready to start travelling south to the Cape you will be travelling through the beautiful interior of South Africa.  Here you will find the vast Savannah land of Karoo.  Helshoogte Pass will take you between Stellenbosch and the Drakenstein Valley.  This scenic valley is full of vineyards, so you can stop and sample South African wine at a number of wineries along the way.

Stop at a bush lodge and take a game drive.  Bush lodges are plentiful in South Africa, which many game reserves and parks.  Kruger National Park is the largest in South Africa, with occupies an area of over 20,000 square miles.  A bush lodge can be a wonderful way to enjoy the incredible natural beauty of the area while being able to take it easy with access to modern conveniences and luxuries.

When you arrive in Cape Town, you will want to stop and explore the city a bit.  Try looking on the internet to see what other travelers are saying about their recent South African trip.  There are many suburbs of Cape Town, each with its own flavor. Kloof Street is one of the most popular areas to stay in Cape Town.  The area is full of restaurants and shopping, and boasts a lively night life.

Keep in mind that the Cape Peninsula has very distinct seasons.  From the months of May to September is the winter, or rainy season.  Temperatures can drop during this time, and rainfall is likely.  From October to April is summer, and temperatures are higher and it is dry and sunny.  If you are planning a beach trip to Boulders Beach, then you might want to plan your trip for the South African summer.

With your South Africa guidebook, some online research and an adventurous spirit, your South African road trip vacation should be a fantastic experience!  Check out www. www.africaodl.org the latest South Africa travel information.
